National Grid Mobile Command Center

National Grid came to LDV for their new mobile command center to help with operations during weather events. Built on a Freightliner M2, National Grid chose to integrate 3 flat-floor slide-outs to maximize their interior space while at a scene.

The vehicle utilizes a multiplex system to assist in automating start-up and shutdown procedures. A communications area features four workstations with task chairs, 22” monitors, custom-fabricated cabinets with magnetic dry erase surfaces, and multiple network connections. A 50” monitor has also been installed on the rear wall. An HP plotter and printer can also be found in this area for creating maps that may be needed while working a scene.

At the front of the vehicle is a conference area featuring fixed bench seating with fixed tables, a fixed conference table with CAT6 network jacks, a 55” MondoPad display, a 50” LED HDTV monitor, and swivel task chairs for use at the conference table. Solid surface countertops have been used throughout for durability. A galley area with a 2.7 cu. ft. fridge and lavatory with pressurized water system provides comfort and convenience to staff and customers they may be assisting.

On the exterior, a 25-kW diesel generator provides electric power to keep the vehicle operating while assisting customers affected by severe weather events. A heavy duty telescoping pneumatic mast with a camera system provides National Grid with the ability to keep watch of the area they are servicing. To ensure the vehicle sits level no matter what the condition of the terrain may be, a heavy-duty vehicle leveling system has been installed. A custom awning provides cover for the entry door and staff who may be utilizing the weatherproof exterior workstation complete with a 50” LED monitor and charging station with duplex outlets, dual USB outlets, and four 12VDC outlets.
