The Louisville Metro Police (KY) chose a Freightliner M2 regular cab for their new Bomb Disposal/EOD vehicle. The 24ft. dry van body includes extreme duty body storage compartments, a vehicle leveling system, and an antenna storage compartment with a slide-out tray for the antenna box. LDV's exclusive Intel-I-Touch™ vehicle automation system controls all vehicle features such as the HVAC, vehicle leveling system, and the 12-kW generator.
The interior features custom-fabricated aluminum cabinets with dry-erase surfaces at the two workstations. Additional features include spider base task chairs, multiple monitors, network connections, communications radios, and dual overhead electronics racks. In the center of the vehicle is a galley kitchen with a microwave, coffee maker, and refrigerator. There are also two steel ATF-spec Day Boxes that sit above aluminum box pan shelves with cargo mesh netting to keep equipment in place during transport. Next to the galley area are aluminum drawers that act as weapons storage and storage with aluminum dividers to separate stored items. Night-time and reduced lighting modes can be utilized depending on the time of day and scene the department is working. An aluminum tray on slides has been installed for customer-owned equipment which can also be removed if needed. The rear area is used for storing the department's bomb robot and includes a flip-down bench seat, monitor, overhead cabinet with dry-erase writing surface, and a countertop area for the robot operator and gear.
The exterior features an LDV-fabricated weatherproof exterior workstation with a small Intel-I-Touch pad, Extron™ control pad, HDMI inputs, CAT6 network jacks, GFCI outlet, and dual USB charging ports. The 2,000lb. Thieman liftgate is utilized to deploy the department's bomb robot when needed. A heavy-duty non-locking telescoping pneumatic mast includes dome network cameras to keep surveillance over the vehicle's surroundings. Pull-out steps with an adjustable handrail provide access to the curbside entry door. A generous motorized retractable awning provides cover for those working at the weatherproof exterior workstation or entering and exiting the vehicle. Roll-up doors house storage compartments with custom-fabricated box pan shelves and a special bomb suit storage compartment with heavy-duty stainless steel hanger rod, two 12 volt fans for air circulation throughout the storage area, and a custom underbody pull-out step to provide easy accessibility. Folding steps mounted to the body provide access to the rooftop including the rooftop storage box.
