The Hartford Police Department selected the Freightliner MT-55 for their DUI response vehicle. It features a 260HP engine and an Allison 2200 EVS automatic transmission with park pawl and PTO provision. An automatic electric steel entry steel is located under the curbside door and the passenger side door for easy entry into the vehicle. Blackout curtains have been added to the cab area for additional privacy when needed.
This 26' load space body features a center entrance with two workstations and bench seating in the forward room. A check-in area with a lavatory and hand pump sink is located in the center of the vehicle. For convenience, a galley kitchen with a 2.7 cu.ft. refrigerator and microwave has been added. The rear features a holding area with two holding cells, each of which include a floor drain, smooth aluminum bleacher-style seating, and long aluminum handcuff bars. Hartford chose to integrate a flat-floor slide-out on their vehicle to increase the interior space of the vehicle. This layout is an effective use of space and can be repurposed for a multitude of emergency responses.
The exterior includes swinging rear door. To assist with parking, a color backup camera system has been installed. HVAC is handled by two low-profile air conditioners and two direct discharge diesel-fired furnaces. A 12-kW generator has been mounted in a custom-fabricated all-aluminum compartment to supply electric power to the vehicle when needed. For access to the roof, a swing out and down ladder has been added along with an electric awning to provide cover over those entering and exiting the vehicle. An automatic leveling system ensures the vehicle sits level when at a scene. Exterior storage compartments have been integrated into the vehicle’s body, one with E-track and ratcheting straps and an aluminum roll-up door to match the body color. Emergency lights are found around the exterior of the vehicle as well.
