We recently completed this 25ft. Freightliner forward control chassis MT-55 custom bookmobile for the San Francisco Public Library. The drivetrain features a Cummins B6 260HP diesel engine with an Allison 2200 HS automatic transmission with park pawl and the rear suspension is Airliner air ride. The truck rolls on polished aluminum front and rear wheels (22.5). Dual curbside entry doors with windows and automatic LED courtesy lights offer access to the interior. Bostrom Pro-Ride swivel seats are a comfortable and functional upgrade for both driver and passenger. The rear of the bookmobile features a 46" X 78" aluminum sedan door for the Broan Millennium 2 Series wheelchair lift. Parking the bookmobile is a snap thanks to the 3-camera color backup camera system. A Dometic® power retractable awning provide shade from the bright California sun.
Inside, the bookmobile has an AM/FM stereo with Bluetooth and 2 pairs of 6X9 speakers for tunes and blackout window coverings for all windows in the front of the bookmobile. One curb side and two streetside sliding windows allow for more natural light and breeze inside the vehicle. Fixed bench seating with vibrant covering provide ample seating including space for a passenger complete with seatbelt. Custom fabricated and colorful powder coated aluminum cabinets provide storage. 15° slantback Acore™ aluminum book shelves are powder coated bright blue and offer lots of room for reading materials. San Francisco also opted for 6 rolling book trucks that can be rolled outside the bookmobile as needed for more book selections while out on the route. They are secured to the walls with security attachment devices during driving. A stowable 18" x 60" folding table with brightly colored laminate top is a welcome addition to provide outdoor checkouts. The customer also wanted a Sensource "people counter" to be included in the vehicle's design. Additionally, a dual position, stowable front work table was included.
Electric power is supplied by an Onan 10kW commercial quiet diesel generator and also by four rooftop-mounted solar panels. HVAC is handled by two 15,000BTU Coleman low profile rooftop A/C units. Overall, this is a fantastic example of a custom bookmobile designed and built to the Library's needs. The integration of solar panels, a carefully designed layout for proper flow and the inclusion of the book carts for more outdoor book selections all make this vehicle a rolling showroom for custom bookmobiles.
