Carlsbad (CA) Police Department Mobile Command Center

The Carlsbad (CA) Police Department chose a Freightliner M2 conventional cab chassis for their new mobile command center. It features a 350DV HP engine and an Allison 3000 EVS automatic transmission with PTO provision. The exterior features a curbside entry door with dual automatic electric steel entry steps and a streetside entry door with pull-out aluminum stairs in a narrow profile cassette. Four industry-exclusive flat-floor slide-out rooms have been incorporated into the vehicle's design to increase the interior space. To control these slide-outs as well as HVAC, generators, awnings, and more, a vehicle multiplex system has also been installed.

The interior is separated into three different areas. The front features a conference area with multiple monitors, custom-fabricated aluminum cabinets, whiteboards, and a single workstation area. The center area includes four workstations with monitors, communications radios, network jacks, power outlets, and custom-fabricated overhead cabinets with whiteboard surfaces. A stowable conference table is strapped to the wall and can be deployed in the center of the area when needed. An electronics rack sits at the front of this space as well. In the rear of the vehicle sits two workstations complete with monitors, communications radios, telephone, and task chairs. These are located on either side of the rear entry door which also features a set of pull-out aluminum steps in a narrow profile cassette. Access to the lavatory is through the streetside entry door and includes a pressurized water system, toilet, sink, wastebasket, and mirror.

On the exterior, a weatherproof workstation has been added to the body and includes a TV monitor, telephone, communications radio, power outlets, network jacks, and a whiteboard. A heavy-duty non-locking telescoping pneumatic mast has been installed on the rear of the vehicle. It features two dome cameras for keeping an eye on the department's surroundings. HVAC is handled by three ducted low-profile air conditioners and three 5,120 Btu/hr wall mount electric heaters. A 25-kW liquid-cooled generator is housed in a custom generator compartment and supplies electric power to the vehicle when needed. Two electric awnings have been installed on the curbside of the vehicle to cover the entryway and exterior workstation.
