Carlsbad, California in the North County region of San Diego County features amazing ocean views, beautiful beaches and the warm southern California sun. With only 110,000 residents, locals and tourists enjoy the excellent shopping, food and outdoors lifestyle the area offers.

Located roughly 85 miles south of Los Angeles and only 35 miles north of downtown San Diego, Carlsbad is a popular year-round tourist destination. Visitors come for the sun and the median temperature of roughly 62 degrees. Attractions such as Legoland® California, challenging golf courses and water sports make Carlsbad a great place to be.

When it came time to design and build a mobile command center, the Department had some specific needs.

“We needed a mobile command vehicle that we could use at critical incidents and community events,” said Lieutenant Greg Koran of the Carlsbad Police Department. “The city of Carlsbad hosts a marathon every January and the vehicle was used as a meeting place and workspace for our officers at the event.”

The vehicle also splits time between the police and fire departments. When designing the vehicle, it had to include features and space to accommodate the two departments in the event where both would operate out of the vehicle simultaneously.

“We work hand in hand with the Carlsbad Fire Department during special events. The vehicle has enough space for us to work together while each can still accomplish their own tasks. It has worked out really well.”

Recently, the vehicle was utilized on the scene of a homicide. The suspects fled to a neighboring jurisdiction and the Command Center was used to coordinate all of the officers involved.

“Using the Mobile Command Center as a temporary workspace and dispatch center during the homicide investigation was invaluable,” said Koran.

Every January, the Carlsbad community hosts a marathon along the ocean that is termed “the best and most scenic winter marathon & half marathon with the best swag.1” This event is a perfect opportunity for the Department to deploy their Mobile Command Center and use it as a meeting place during the race.

“The vehicle is great for public relations in the community as it is clearly identified as a place to go for help during special events,” Koran mentioned.

Special Service Vehicles Sales Specialist, Rick Zinnen noted, “It is so much more than an incident response vehicle. Using it at a number of community events allows them to get so much more use out of the vehicle.”

The vehicle is equipped with a host of technology to help the department during their operations. For instance, the rear-mounted pneumatic mast includes dual dome network IP cameras with lightfinder technology for surveillance needs. Eleven workstations inside the vehicle allow officers and staff to perform their duties just as they would back at home base.

“The technology within the vehicle allows us to communicate with our officers effectively during large, planned community events such as our annual marathon and during unplanned critical incidents as well,” stated Koran.

Designing the vehicle to be easy to set up and deploy was critical. LDV integrated two of our Intel-I-Touch™ vehicle automation touchscreens to simplify the setup of the vehicle.

“Everything is controlled right from the Intel-I-Touch. From extending to the slide-outs to starting the generator and controlling the lighting and HVAC; within minutes, the truck is fully deployed,” said Zinnen.

Why did you choose LDV to build this vehicle?

“From the initial visit to design and build to final delivery, working with LDV was outstanding. We really appreciated the professionalism by the entire team and they truly worked to ensure we built the vehicle for our specific needs,” said Koran.
